Mike Pereira On Felger & Mazz: Was Brandon Lloyd's Penalty Justified?
Felger and Massarotti were joined by former head of NFL officiating Mike Pereira to discuss some calls made during divisional playoff weekend in the NFL.
The guys started off by talking about some of the calls from the Texans-Patriots game. Did Pereira feel the crew made the right call by ruling Owen Daniels down by forward progress, thereby taking a fumble and recovery away from the Patriots?
"I think it was a little quick technically -- technically, the ball was pried out two yards behind the progress spot," Pereira said. "Technically, the official was right, but common sense-wise, I think you'll see that probably eight out of 10 times played as a fumble."
Did Brandon Lloyd deserve a penalty for throwing the ball to the umpire? Pereira says yes.
"I think the way that he flung the ball at the official," Pereira said. "I think what kind of made him react as an official is the way that he threw it at him and then just kind of stared at him and walked away, instead of giving a reaction of almost like, 'Hey, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to throw it like that at you.'
"His actions after he did it is what I think got the umpire to throw the flag. I don't disagree with him [the official]. ... To throw the ball like that and then walk away from you without any form of apology or any concern I think is wrong."
In the Ravens-Broncos game, should the Peyton Manning fumble have been called for the tuck rule? Baltimore took a practice kick between overtimes in Denver and Matt Bryant in Atlanta went ahead and kicked the ball even thought the time out had been called well before. Should practice kicks be banned?
