Mike Mottau On Toucher & Rich: 'Just Trying To Stay On The Ice'
The NHL has canceled all games through the month of November and reports are that the Winter Classic will be the next game to go. While many of the big names headed overseas to play in other leagues, that's not an option for everyone.
Defenseman Mike Mottau played for the Bruins last season, but is currently an unrestricted free agent without a team. The eight-year veteran joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich on Wednesday to discuss how this NHL lockout is really hurting veterans like himself, and what he's doing to stay in shape.
Even though there are no games being played and there doesn't seem to be an end to the lockout coming anytime soon, players are not just sitting around.
"I'm just trying to stay on the ice as much as possible," said Mottau. "We got a group of guys -- some of the Bruins, some of the local guys -- who are sitting out here we're going up and skating and trying to get a good workout each day."
At 34-years-old, if things don't get figured out soon with the NHL owners and NHLPA, how does Mottau's future in hockey look?
"I'm towards the tail end of my career, a depth defenseman, (and) missing a year of hockey would be pretty difficult for me landing a job coming back out of the lockout. As far as that and my situation, it's pretty real," he said. "I'm dressed up as a father of four, unemployed right now this Halloween."
