Mike Lowell With Red Sox To Coach Will Middlebrooks
BOSTON (CBS) -- The gang of recently retired Red Sox working with the team in Fort Myers continues to increase in size.
The latest addition? That would be former third baseman Mike Lowell.
Lowell showed up at Red Sox spring training on Tuesday morning, and The Boston Globe reported that he's there to help coach Will Middlebrooks at third base.
The image of Mike Lowell back in a Red Sox jersey won't be around too long, though, as the Globe indicated Lowell's also worked with the Miami Marlins in addition to his analyst job at MLB Network.
Still, even if temporarily, Lowell joins a growing list of Red Sox alumni who are helping the team in some capacity this year, including Pedro Martinez, Jason Varitek and Tim Wakefield.
Lowell played with the Red Sox from 2006-10, earning World Series MVP honors in 2007.
Middlebrooks posted a .949 fielding percentage last seasona nd did not have a bad year defensively, but there's always something to learn from Lowell, whose .974 fielding percentage is the best all time among players who started at least 600 games at third base.
"Any time you can work with someone who has won World Series and won Gold Gloves, I'm all for it," Middlebrooks told the Globe. "It's great to have that at your disposal."
