Middleton Ferrari Crash Kills 2

MIDDLETON (CBS) -- Two men were killed in a one-car crash in Middleton on Sunday evening, officials said.

Neighbors told WBZ-TV that the brand new Ferrari burst into flames after hitting a wall, spinning out of control, and then slamming into a tree on Peabody Street.

The crash was reported by a neighbor at 6:02 p.m.

"I was at the top of my driveway and I heard the horn beeping nonstop," neighbor James Gilroy said. "I looked and there were flames probably 20 to 30 feet in the air. I told my wife to call 911, but it was clearly too late"

Police said accidents are common on the winding road.

"It appears that it went off the road, spun out, and burst into flames," said Middleton Police Chief James DiGianvittorio.

Police said an accident reconstruction team is investigating the cause of the crash.

"It's a terrible tragedy. Our hearts go out to the families," said Middleton Fire Chief Frank Twist. "It's a small town, and it will have an impact, I'm sure."

WBZ-TV reports that speed appears to have been a factor in the crash.

"It's just a sad thing," said Gilroy. "People go down there too fast."

The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
