Middlesex Jail In Cambridge Closes After 32 Years

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (CBS/AP) – The Middlesex Jail in Cambridge has closed after 32 years of operations.

Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian says the jail at the Edward Sullivan Courthouse officially closed on Saturday afternoon. The closure occurred after authorities completed the transfer of 220 detainees to the Middlesex House of Correction and Jail in Billerica.

The detainees are awaiting trial and their transfer to the facility in Billerica took two days.

Koutoujian was on hand Saturday to witness the last detainees leaving the jail in Cambridge.

The sheriff said that re-establishing a jail in the southern area of Middlesex County where 12 of the 14 county courts are located is a top priority.
