26-year-old Nicholas Pilalas is charged with killing 20-year-old Dalton Goulart of Middleboro early Sunday morning.
Witnesses told police Pilalas got into a confrontation with a group of young men on Plympton Street just after midnight.
WBZ-TV's Paul Burton reports
One of them punched Pilalas in the face, according to investigators, and that's when Pilalas pulled out a knife from his pocket and began swinging it around.
Goulart was stabbed in the heart. He was rushed to Jordan Hospital where he died a short time later.
Pilalas was arrested. He was arraigned Monday in Wareham District Court.
One of his neighbors told WBZ-TV Pilalas has been troubled since his brother died, but he never expected anything like this.
"For something like that to happen, I can't figure it out. It doesn't make sense," Glen Hammarberg said.
"Something, (there's got) to be more behind it."
"How could a 26-year-old guy find the need to pull out a knife and attack a bunch of young kids? Did you not grow up yet?" Goulart family friend Matthew Bishop told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.
Friends of Goulart said the fight started because Pilalas was harassing a group of women and the men stopped to intervene.
Police say the two had never had any contact before this incident.
