Menino's Doctors Say Infection Better But Back Is Worse
BOSTON (CBS) - Mayor Tom Menino's doctors met with reporters Monday afternoon at Brigham and Women's Hospital to update his condition.
Menino has been there since October 26 after he cut short an anniversary trip to Italy with his wife.
Dr. Dale Adler, chair of medicine and Dr. Charles Morris, chair of internal medicine told reporters Menino's condition has improved and his only problem now is acute back pain.
Doctors said they have found no sign of cancer or heart problems.
Adler said a compression fracture in his back was improving during rehabilitation over the past three weeks but recently, Menino has been experiencing more pain.
Adler said this has prompted more investigation.
Doctors said when Menino came to the hospital, he had an acute infection and a blood clot in his leg that traveled to the mayor's lungs.
Menino's spokesperson Dot Joyce said Menino is still running the city day-to-day. Doctors said any medication Menino is on is not impairing his decision making.
Joyce would not comment on Menino's political future.
"Obviously he's frustrated he likes to be out of the street seeing people," Joyce said. "His frustration now is focused on getting better. He's doing everything these guys are telling him."

He told the Boston Globe last week he was "a pretty sick guy" who lost all of his energy and was "completely fatigued."
Menino, 69, is the longest-serving mayor in Boston's history.
He's currently in his fifth term.
