Menino & Other Mass. Mayors Urge National Government To Settle Debt Ceiling Crisis
BOSTON (AP) - Mayors from across Massachusetts are calling upon national lawmakers to reach a deal in the debt ceiling talks.
In a letter to President Barack Obama and the 12 members of the Massachusetts congressional delegation, 20 members of the Massachusetts Mayors Association urged them to push for compromise and reach a long-term deal to keep the economy stable.
The letter, signed by the mayors of Boston, New Bedford, Chicopee and other cities across the state, criticized national lawmakers' inability to compromise, and said their focus should be on job creation and economic growth.
Democratic Sen. John Kerry says he shares the mayors' frustration and criticized the Republican-led House for delaying a vote on a deal Thursday. Republican Sen. Scott Brown has said he's disappointed by the lack of a bipartisan solution.
