Men Charged With Stealing 13,000 Feet Of Copper Wire Underneath Highways
SPRINGFIELD (CBS) -- Two Massachusetts men are facing charges after police say they popped open manhole covers to steal 13,000 feet of copper wire underneath highways
Transportation officials told police on June 15 about the copper wire thefts along sections of Interstates 91 and 391 in western Massachusetts.
"The thieves had forced entry through manhole covers along these highways, gaining access to the wires that supply power to the light poles of this area," Massachusetts State Police said.
The 13,000 feet of wire weighed almost 5,000 pounds and is valued at about $50,000.
Luis M. Colon, 42, of Springfield, and Alejandro B. Rodriguez, 19, of Chicopee, were arrested on Monday. They both face stolen property and conspiracy charges.
