Memorial Day Tributes Honor Fallen Heroes From Massachusetts
BOSTON (CBS/AP) – Several events will mark Memorial Day across the state Monday.
Here are just a few of them:
On Boston Common, there 37,000 American flags on display, each one a tribute to a man or woman from Massachusetts killed in battles dating back to the Revolutionary War.
HYDE PARK
In Hyde Park, services will be held at Fairview Cemetery at 11 a.m.
The day's activities begin with an 8 a.m. service at the Fogg-Roberts American Legion Post 78 on Harvard Avenue.
Participants will then march to a Mass at Most Precious Blood Parish on Maple Street and then return to the post for the start of a tour of local veteran's squares.
The procession will end up at the Civil War Memorial at Fairview Cemetery.
BRIGHTON
A Memorial Day observance will also be held at Evergreen Cemetery on Commonwealth Avenue in Brighton, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
ABINGTON
The town of Abington will honor fallen Marine Sergeant Daniel Vasselian Monday, when his name is added to the All War Memorial where it will join the names of Abington World War I, World War II, Korean and Vietnam soldiers lost in conflict.
Vasselian was killed December 23 while serving his third tour in Afghanistan.
Before the ceremony there will be a parade starting at 10 a.m. on Washington Street.
SUDBURY
A memorial will be dedicated in Sudbury at 2 p.m. in honor of Lt. Scott Milley, an Army Ranger from Sudbury who was killed in action in Afghanistan on November 30, 2010.
HOPKINTON
There will be Memorial Day services at 9:45 a.m. in Evergreen Cemetery on Route 135, 10:30 a.m. Mayhew Street and 11 a.m. at Mt Auburn Cemetery. At 11:25 a.m. there will be a march from Mayhew Street to the Town Common.
BOSTON MAYOR EVENTS
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh will attend several events Monday.
At 9:30 a.m. he will take part in the 46th annual service at The Gardens of Gethsemane cemetery on Baker Street in West Roxbury.
The mayor will then head to Dorchester for a ceremony at Cedar Grove Cemetery on Adams Street at 11 a.m.
At 12:45 p.m., Walsh will attend a memorial service honoring late Vietnam veterans at UMass-Boston.
FREE ADMISSION
The Museum of Fine Arts on Huntington Avenue will offer free admission Monday during an "open house" event to mark Memorial Day.
