Melting Reveals Roof Damage On Hundreds Of Homes

SOUTH BOSTON (CBS) - Most of the snow is now gone and people are beginning to see what lay under that thick snowpack. In many cases, what was left behind on roofs, was damage.

The phone at Tempco Roofing in South Boston has been ringing off the hook with people begging to have their leaks fixed.

"The amount of damage that we're seeing just from shoveling has been very extreme," owner John Tempesta said. "People shoveled their roofs. You can't really blame them, but I think in the long run the bad outweighed the good."

Tempesta said he has taken hundreds of calls from people who hacked up or punctured their roofs trying to clear the snow.

A big part of the problem is that most flat roofs are made of rubber, which is very fragile when you're talking about taking a pick axe or a shovel to it.

"People were under the impression that shoveling a roof is like shoveling a sidewalk, where you dig right down to the sidewalk," Tempesta said. "But it isn't like that. You have to keep the shovel off the roof surface to prevent punctures."
