Mehta On Toucher & Rich: Would Revis Really Leave New England For Jets?
BOSTON (CBS) -- It's pretty clear that Woody Johnson wants Darrelle Revis back on the New York Jets, as Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reported earlier this week.
Should Patriots fans be worried that their rival in the AFC East may lure away their best defensive player? Mehta joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich on Wednesday to discuss New York's interest in Revis, and thinks they may be willing to offer more money should Revis hit the free agent market.
"If you look at recent history, and Revis' history more specifically, he was making $16 million a year in Tampa and the average for his two years with New England was $16 million. I would think that $16 million, on average, would make sense. But what really matters is [the guaranteed money], and more specifically, how much he'll make in the first three years of the contract. That would be three years, $48 million and you can tack on a few years after that," explained Mehta. "Of that $48 million, I would think $40 million fully guaranteed would get it done. I don't know if the Jets want to offer that, but I would think the Patriots wouldn't want to go that high. But that remains to be seen."
Mehta did say that if the Patriots release Revis from his contract, he will give the team a real chance to work out a long-term deal. But there will be plenty of other "landmines" in free agency, with Rex Ryan and the Buffalo Bills also posing a threat to Revis' return to New England.
"You can't discount the fact Revis loved playing for Rex, mainly because Rex allowed Revis to play to his strengths. I don't think you can rule that out," said Mehta. "If he does hit the market, there are going to be a good amount of teams who are seriously interested."
