Measles Cases Confirmed At 2 Mass. Hospitals
BOSTON (CBS) – The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has confirmed two cases of measles which were diagnosed in August at Mass General Hospital in Boston and Metrowest Hospital in Framingham.
The DPH says measles is very contagious and people who are not immune may be at risk for developing measles or may now be developing symptoms of the disease.
Anyone showing symptoms of measles and visited the hospitals on any of the dates listed below is advised to contact their health care provider.
- MGH, Boston Medical Walk-in Clinic - 8/17, 8/19
- MGH, Boston Emergency Dept. 8/20
- MGH, Boston Inpatient 8/20, 8/21, 8/22, 8/23
- Metrowest Hospital, Framingham Emergency Department 8/23, 8/24
- Metrowest Hospital, Framingham Inpatient 8/23, 8/24
According to the DPH, early symptoms of measles occur 10 days to two weeks after exposure and may resemble a cold but a rash occurs on the skin 2-4 days after the initial symptoms develop.
CHECK: Measles Fact Sheet
"Fortunately, most people have been vaccinated against measles," said State Epidemiologist Dr. Al DeMaria. "Our efforts now are to identify people who may be at risk for getting ill and who may spread the disease further, and asking them to telephone their providers rather than going directly to a healthcare facility."
People who have had measles in the past or who have been vaccinated are considered immune.
