McAdam On Sox Free Agency: 'Not In Market For New Car'
Red Sox insider Sean McAdam is out in Milwaukee covering the owners meetings this week and he joined Toucher & Rich to discuss the ongoing search for a new Sox manager, what moves the Sox could make in free agency and pitching.
The Cubs and Red Sox are both still looking for a manager, is this complicating matters?
"There's no question, I mean they interviewed three of the same guys. The Red Sox tried to interview Mike Maddux, who interviewed with the Cubs and he pulled out of Red Sox consideration for family and geographic reasons. So they would have had 4 of the same candidates, as it is they have three. And there's reason to believe that certainly Dale Sveum has to be looked at as the front runner now in Boston and he may well be the same in Chicago," McAdam said.
Reports indicate that the Sox have kicked the tires on free agent starting pitcher Mark Buehrle, but Ben Cherington has gone out of his way to say that the Sox wouldn't be making a big splash in free agency. How serious does McAdam think the Sox are about Buehrle?
"I think they are to the degree that they want to see what it is he's looking for. One thing about Buehrle is that he's been incredibly durable, he's had 11 straight seasons of double figure wins and 200 innings pitched," said McAdam.
Also is there any hint that the Sox will have an offseason like last year where they make huge blockbuster deals?
"All of Cherington's remarks so far this offseason have been using the metaphor of we're not in the market for a new car, we're kind of tinkering under the hood," McAdam said.
