MBTA Unveils New Commuter Rail Train Design

BOSTON (CBS) - As the MBTA begins to consider whether to raise bus and subway fares next year, they are announcing the design for the 20 new commuter rail locomotives that will begin to come on line in 2013.

Passengers got to pick the design. They chose a sleek-looking train with a purple lightning bolt down the sides.

MBTA General Manager Richard Davey says it was important that passengers weigh in.

"This was a reminder to our commuter rail customers that these new locomotives are coming," said Davey.

He pointed out that with the new trains, the T will be able to retire old trains, and that will mean fewer delays.

"The number-one reason for delay in commuter rail is because of locomotive failure," said Davey of the aging fleet.

The diesel-electric locomotives are being built by an Idaho company at a cost of $114 million.
