MBTA Trains Kept In Tunnels Overnight To Shield Against Cold

BOSTON (CBS) -- A day after record-breaking cold temperatures caused delays on the T, an MBTA spokesman gave a glimpse of how transportation workers were fighting the cold.

Joe Pesaturo shared photos of MBTA cars from all four rapid transit lines being stored in tunnels overnight to shield them from the cold.

"These temperatures are really unprecedented," said Pesaturo.

Several lines of the T experienced delays Sunday due to the cold weather--including delays on the Orange Line due to tracks separating near Assembly Square.

"That's not uncommon among transit systems around the world in colder climates," Pesaturo said of track separation. "It is something that you have to deal with when temperatures drop below five degrees."

Five degrees was about the temperature this morning when trains started running.
