MBTA Police Officers Rescue Father And Daughter From Tunnel Crash
BOSTON (CBS) - A Boston dad and his 5-year-old girl credit Transit Police for rescuing them from a terrifying accident scene.
Edward Butler says he was driving in the Tip O'Neill Tunnel when a tire popped off his vehicle. Surveillance video shows how his car careened into a side wall and flipped over before sliding on its roof across four lanes, slamming into the other side.
"The roof of the car was touching the steering wheel," says Butler. He was trapped in the wreckage and his daughter was entangled in her seat belt. "It was tangled up on my tummy," explains Yocelyn.
Luckily, MBTA Police happened to be right behind them. They were on the way to serve a search warrant, when they jumped to the rescue.
"They were upset. They were yelling. They were frantic," says Officer Elizabeth Dumas.
"With a crowbar, I smashed the windows of the vehicle," says Det. Patrick Guilfoy. "I couldn't get the girl out because of the seat belt, her whole body was contorted with the seat belt."
A passerby provided a knife to cut the girl free. She and her father survived with only scratches and scrapes. "We were lucky," says Butler. He believes a guardian angel must have been watching over them.
