MBTA Officer Wounded In Shootout Remains Positive
BOSTON (CBS) – The MBTA officer nearly killed in the Watertown shootout with the Boston Marathon bombing suspects is opening up about his recovery. Officer Richard Donohue moved from Mt. Auburn Hospital to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital this week.
He wears a compression sock on his left leg to help ease the nerve pain from a bullet still trapped in his body. Donohue also uses crutches to get around. He lost 20 pounds, and a lot of his strength, this past month.

"I had some real trying days," said Donohue, who is just starting to eat solid foods again. " The pain was one thing, but not being able to eat was another. I love to cook and eat good food, and I haven't been able to do either."
Donohue was essentially dead after being shot and losing most of his blood within minutes. A sergeant went to his home in Woburn to break the news to his wife.
"I remember them going 100 miles per hour to get me to the hospital and just feeling sick the whole way there," Kim Donohue said of being rushed to Mt. Auburn hospital.
The couple has a 7-month-old son, who has served as motivation for Officer Donohue.
"I have a family to take care of, and I want to get back to work," Donohue said Sunday. "I want to be able to be a good father, a good husband, a good officer."
Weeks of physical therapy are ahead for the officer but he, and his wife, say they'll do whatever it takes to get him back to 100 percent.
"We just don't sit around feeling sorry for ourselves, and we don't sit around crying about the situation," Kim said. "We just say, 'What next?'"
The pair say they feel no anger toward the marathon bombing suspects. The Donohues call those emotions a "waste of energy."
