Mazz Warming Up To Idea Of Tom Werner As MLB Commissioner

BOSTON  (CBS) - You would think a man responsible for the launching of such television shows as Mork & Mindy, Roseanne, The Cosby Show, 3rd Rock From The Sun and That 70's Show would have no business running a professional sports league, but you'd be wrong.

Red Sox chairman Tom Werner is one of three finalists with the chance to succeed Bud Selig to be the next commissioner of Major League Baseball. Owners will vote on Thursday August 14, the final day of the quarterly owners meetings. A candidate needs 23 of the 30 votes to get elected.

Selig's right-hand man and MLB COO Rob Manfred is believed to be the favorite, but a dissenting group of owners led by Chicago White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf and Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno are working to block Manfred's election, and use their clout to convince the other owners to pick Tom Werner to the position.

Tony Massarotti found Werner's candidacy laughable when news came out last week of his nomination to the final three. He even joked to Michael Felger, "If Tom Werner Can Be Commissioner Of Baseball, I Could Be President … Of Germany."

But after looking into it more closely, Tony Mazz is actually starting to warm up to the idea, but it has nothing to do with Werner and everything to do with Manfred.

Marc Bertrand is still passionately against it, and it made for an interesting discussion to start Monday's show.
