Mazz: Bill Belichick Is Like The John Calipari Of The NFL
BOSTON (CBS) -- While the whole world reacted to the heavy punishment laid down on Tom Brady and the Patriots, one prominent figure has remained relatively untouched: Bill Belichick.
The fact that Belichick, the man with Spygate on his resume, has gone (for the most part) un-punished after the ruling from the NFL did not escape Tony Massarotti.
"There was a clear and concerted attempt from the very beginning to keep Bill Belichick out of this thing, which they effectively have done," Massarotti said of the Patriots. "So I have no choice but to now think Bill Belichick in some ways -- some -- is the John Calipari of the NFL. Two scandals now and not a single game suspension. He has missed no games -- none. Zero. He got a $500,000 fine the first time through, but again, he skates, untouched, unscathed.
"Meanwhile, Tom Brady gets four games? Four. Belichick: Zero. Nothing. Nada. Not a one. Spygate, DeflateGate, untouched again.
"To me," Mazz continued, "this is another part of the story that I look and say, you've got to be kidding me. You absolutely, positively have to be kidding me. How do they have two things like that, lose two first-round picks, what now amounts to close to $2 million in fines, a fourth-round pick, and lose the quarterback for four games ... and the coach doesn't miss a game? Not one, not a second of a game.
"Wes Welker cracks a foot joke and has to sit out the opening series in a game against the New York Jets. Bill Belichick costs the Patriots two first-round picks, a fourth-rounder, a million bucks on their side, 500 grand on his -- he did pay a fine -- Tom Brady gets four games, which will amount to $2 million in salary .... and Belichick gets zero. Nothing. It's really unbelievable to me that Belichick [has made it] through two scandals now. He's like a college basketball coach. It's unbelievable. It never gets to him."
