Mayor Walsh: 'Sad' No Protests After 7-Year-Old Boy Was Shot In Dorchester

DORCHESTER (CBS) -- Residents in Dorchester are angered after a 7-year-old boy was shot Sunday afternoon while riding his bike in the neighborhood.

"I'm getting mad, I'm frustrated. Stop shooting little kids," one neighbor said.

Police say 7-year-old Divan Silva, of Brockton, is recovering from surgery after being struck by a bullet in the buttocks. Silva was visiting his grandmother for Memorial Day weekend.

The incident occurred near a barber shop on Bowdoin Street. A shop employee was seen Monday morning washing away the bloody markings off the sidewalk.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh reflected on the close call saying there's not enough outrage against gun violence.

"We're working hard every day to make sure we can bring down the violence," Walsh said. "What's sad is there's no outrage or protest about a 7-year-old being shot."

"There's some protests around the country with police officers' interaction with people, I think some of those protests, we need to start looking at our neighborhood and say, 'what do we need to do to get the guns off our streets,' Walsh said.

A 20-year-old man was also grazed in the head and is expected to be OK.

Police describe the shooter as 14 to 18-year-old light-skinned male, about 5 feet, 10 inches tall and wearing a red hoodie and tan pants. Police say the suspect may have fled in a newer model white 4-door sedan after the shooting.

"It's such a sad situation and we're asking people to be diligent and if you know any information just let the police know," Walsh said.
