Maverick, Dog Who Chewed Off Own Foot, Enjoying Life With New Family

STOW (CBS) -- If you've ever wondered what a little TLC can do, Maverick the German Shepherd's recovery is a perfect example.

A little over a year old, Maverick has overcome a lot in his few dog years--and deep down, his new owner, Mark Douglas, says he's just a puppy.

"He's a sweet dog," Douglas said. "He's got a lot of love, but he's still puppy."

Maverick had chewed off his paw to free himself from abuse. He was rescued by the MSPCA, underwent a special surgery developed by veterinary surgeons in Boston, and, weeks ago, rescued again by the Douglas family.

Douglas first heard Maverick's story back in July. He went to the MSPCA-Angell Animal Medical Center website to make a donation for his impending surgery, but also put his name in the ring to adopt him.

Mark says he knew instantly this was a friendship meant to last, and so did Maverick.

"It was like we had known him for years," said Douglas. "He was giving kisses, and within a minute he rolled over and wanted his belly rubbed."

Maverick's foot is still in the healing phase--he has encountered a bit of a setback and will have an additional surgery Thursday to re-adjust the pad on his paw--but doctors expect him to make a full recovery.
