At Mattapan Barbershop's 'Cut And Curls' Event, Kids Get Free Hair Cuts, School Supplies
MATTAPAN (CBS) -- For the seventh year in a row, a Mattapan barbershop is offering free haircuts for kids grades 1-7.
Mattapan's Finest barbershop owner Jamie Lee Mitchell said he got the idea for Sunday's "Cut and Curl" event when he was taking his daughter to her first day of school.
"I was looking around at some kids, and I said, 'these kids ain't got no haircuts!'" said Mitchell.
So he decided to do something for them.
"We give little boys haircuts, we have girls pressing curls," said Mitchell. "We have nail techs come out and do the girls' nails."
Now, a number of sponsors have chipped in--so not only does Mitchell have kids looking great for their first day back to school, but he now also hands out backpacks full of school supplies while they last.
He and his staff hope to give haircuts to up to 300 grade-school kids Sunday. The event goes from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
