Mass Department of Transportation says police will go easy on forgetful drivers by offering warnings for the next couple of months.
Officials say by constructing the lane, they are able to preserve a break down lane, or shoulder, for disabled vehicles or new vehicles entering the highway.
MassDot Highway Administrator Frank DePaola says the $54 million project will pay to widen about six miles of road.
Thursday and Friday, the fourth lane will extend on Route 128 south from Westwood through Canton. After Thanksgiving, drivers going the other direction will see expanded lanes from Canton to Westwood.
But don't worry, construction crews won't be gone for long.
The final phase of the project will widen the highway between Newton and Westwood. That's expected to happen in 2016.
