The state's economy lost almost 5,000 jobs for the month. Year to date, jobs in the state are up by 31,400.

Secretary of Workforce Development Joann Goldstein isn't worried. She tells me the unemployment rate is more than a full point below what it was a year ago, and almost two points below the national average.
Goldstein notes the monthly reports are snapshots. She says a couple of more months are needed to determine if there's a pattern.
Goldstein says August numbers can fluctuate, whether it's because people give up looking for work in the summer, or have child care issues, and some people just like to have the summer off.
