Massachusetts State Police Trooper Shoots Man With Knife In Malden
MALDEN (CBS) – A Massachusetts State Police Trooper shot a man with a knife in Malden early Thursday afternoon. It happened just after 12:30 p.m. on Beach Street.
Police say that they were first called to a Stop & Shop in Revere after a 62-year-old man from Malden was asked to leave.
"The subject then began walking, according to witnesses, westerly on Beach Street toward the city of Malden. At that point, a Massachusetts state trooper that was on duty observed the subject and began to interact with the subject. According to witnesses, the subject was armed with a knife," said Col. Christopher Mason, Superintendent of State Police.
Col. Mason said as the man continued walking, the on-duty officer asked him to drop the knife. He did not comply, according to police. After a Malden officer joined the initial on-duty officer in asking him to drop the knife as he walked on Beach Street toward Olive Street, the he still did not let go of the weapon.
According to police, initial hand control techniques were also unsuccessful in getting him to let go of the knife.
"At some point, the trooper discharged his firearm, his service firearm, striking the subject. At that point, the trooper and the Malden officer again attempted to apply hand control techniques to the subject, and the subject remained combative. But ultimately, they were able to gain control of the subject and place the subject under arrest," said Col. Mason.
After his arrest, the man was taken to Mass General Hospital, where he is in stable condition as of Thursday afternoon. He is being charged with assault, battery and possession of a dangerous weapon.
No officers were injured.
The incident is still under investigation by the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office.
