State Police Warn Of Scam Calls Soliciting Drug Prevention Donations

BOSTON (CBS) – Massachusetts State Police are getting the word out about a telephone scam.

Police say callers soliciting donations for drug prevention and intervention programs are claiming to be members of the State Police or affiliated with them.

"Please be advised that these claims are fraudulent," police said in a statement. "The State Police are not conducting any fundraisers and do not conduct phone solicitations for anything."

Anyone who does get a call from these solicitors should not provide any personal or financial information. Police say it's better to just hang up.

You can check a charity's background with the Secretary of State's Corporation Division at 617-727-9640.
