New Narcan Works Faster To Stop Overdose

BOSTON (CBS) - With opioid overdoses continuing to increase in Massachusetts, first responders are always looking for ways to save lives. Now, there's a new Narcan applicator that's taking hold. "It's fast, and easy to use," says Cohasset Police Officer Paul Wilson. "No assembly."

Wilson found the new applicator at a conference in Atlanta last spring and has now convinced South Shore Hospital to distribute the small device which is like a nasal spray.

"Anything that reduces time helps patients, and us in the ER," says Dr. Jason Tracy, who heads up the hospital's Emergency Services.

The old Narcan applicator required several steps before the reversal drug could be administered and first responders are often under stress from loved ones.

"Police are often the first ones on scene, so anything that reduces time and stress is good," says Dr. Paul Schubert. "And this new applicator is more powerful, four milligrams instead of two."
