Massachusetts Medical Society Takes New Stands On E-Cigarettes, Antibiotics
NEWTON (CBS) -- The Massachusetts Medical Society has adopted new policies on electronic cigarettes and the the use of antibiotic medications in farm animals.
The new policies were endorsed at the MMS Interim Meeting held Saturday at the Newton Marriott Hotel. The Interim Meeting brings together hundreds of Massachusetts physicians from across the state to "consider resolutions on public health policy, health care delivery, and organizational administration," according to a prepared statement from the organization.
The new MMS policy on e-cigarettes targets their use among youth. The policy states "MMS opposes the marketing, sales, and use of e-cigarettes and other nicotine delivery products among youth, particularly for persons under the age of 18."
The new MMS policy on antibiotics calls for legislation and regulations to ban the non-therapeutic use of antibiotics in farm animals in the commonwealth. MMS also committed itself to educating the public about the antibiotic resistance consequences of using the drugs in animals.
"The widespread use of antibiotics in animal husbandry presents a threat to personal and public health by increasing the resistance to antibiotics," the new policy states.
