Massachusetts Gets Top Marks In New Education Report

WASHINGTON (CBS) -- Massachusetts is at the head of the class once again in a new report ranking America's school systems by state.

The Bay State is the only one to earn a B+ in Education Week's "State of the States" report card. The nationwide average is a C.

"Consistently a strong performer, the state improved on the B it earned in 2015," the newspaper says.

Massachusetts is accustomed to winning accolades for its public schools. In September, it was named the best state for teachers in a WalletHub ranking.

In this new report, Massachusetts receives top marks for education opportunities "from cradle to career." Schools here also get more financial support from the state and show improvement in achievement levels.

Maryland, New Jersey and Vermont scored well, too, earning a B. At the bottom of the list with a grade of D were Nevada, Mississippi and New Mexico.
