Mass. State Rep. Proposes New Rules To Prevent Chemical Plant Explosions
BEACON HILL (CBS) - A state representative from Danvers is proposing legislation he says will prevent boiler explosions like the one that leveled a Danvers neighborhood five years ago.
The 2006 explosion at a factory destroyed an entire neighborhood although there were no injuries.
A similar explosion at a chemical plant in Middleton earlier this year injured four workers.
Rep. Ted Speliotis says his legislation would remove the risk of human error.
The new legislation would require smaller chemical plants to have 24-hour boiler operators, something that large chemical plants are required to do.
"These small chemical plants don't do that. But they have almost the same potential to damage an entire neighborhood," he said.
The hearing is Monday, 1 pm.
