Mass. National Guard 379th Engineer Company Headed To Afghanistan
WORCESTER (CBS) – A Massachusetts Army National Guard unit was given a sendoff Friday morning at Mechanics Hall in Worcester as it prepared to depart for deployment in Afghanistan.
The 160-member 379th Engineer Company, based in Bourne, is headed for a nine-month stint in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
It is the unit's third overseas deployment since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. In 2003 the 379th was sent to Kuwait in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and in 2010 it deployed to Afghanistan.
The soldiers will spend a month at Fort Bliss in Texas before leaving for Afghanistan.
