Mass. Gas Prices Fall Below $3 For First Time In 4 Years

BOSTON (CBS/AP) -- The average cost of a gallon of gas in Massachusetts has fallen below the $3 threshold for the first time in almost four years.

AAA Southern New England reports Monday that the price of a gallon of self-serve, regular fell 8 cents in the past week to an average of $2.96.

The last time gas was lower than $3 was in December 2010.

The current per-gallon average price in Massachusetts is now 30 cents lower than a month ago and 32 cents lower than at this time last year. It remains 3 cents per gallon higher than the national average.

AAA found self-serve, regular selling for as low as $2.75 per gallon and as high as $3.43.

"This is the first time in almost four years that the average price for regular unleaded gasoline at the pump has fallen below three dollars a gallon and the decline comes at a great time for consumers," said Mary Maguire, AAA Southern New England director of public and legislative affairs. "They'll now have more cash to spend on holiday travel, gifts, and festivities."
