Mass. Gaming Panel Rejects Bids For Extensions
BOSTON (AP) — The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has rejected several requests for extensions to file casino applications.
The panel had set a 5 p.m. Tuesday deadline for companies to submit initial applications along with $400,000 application fees.
On Thursday, the commission considered, but denied, four requests for waivers including one from Chicopee Mayor Michael Bissonnette, who had still hoped to lure a casino developer into the western Massachusetts city.
Two other companies eyeing a casino in Holyoke also requested an extension, citing the shifting position of the city's mayor on whether to negotiate with casino developers.
Another company requested more time, saying that a key funder had recently died.
Eleven firms met the deadline and will now be subject to background checks by the commission.
