Mass. Casino Opponents Seek Debate On Ballot Question
BOSTON (AP) — Anti-casino activists are calling on the state's top lawmakers and executives from the three casino companies that have won state gambling licenses to a political debate.
The Repeal the Casino Deal group proposed on Wednesday a series of "independent, media-sponsored" debates between now and the Nov. 4 election, when voters will decide on a ballot question to repeal the state's casino law.
John Ribeiro, the campaign's chairman, says he would present the case for repealing the law.
He wants the heads of Wynn Resorts, MGM Resorts International and Penn National Gaming as well as Massachusetts House Speaker Robert DeLeo and incoming Senate President Stanley Rosenberg to offer pro-casino arguments.
The challenge came hours after Wynn and state gambling regulators finalized a license for a $1.6 billion casino outside Boston.
