Mass. Among States In Salmonella Outbreak; Sushi To Blame?
BOSTON (CBS) - Sushi is being eyed as the possible source of a growing Salmonella outbreak that has seen 100 cases nationwide and four cases here in Massachusetts.
The investigation has not conclusively identified a food source, but the CDC reported on Friday that Public health officials have been able to determine that many of the people who fell ill reported consuming sushi, sashimi, or similar foods in a variety of locations in the week before becoming ill.
If a specific food source is identified for this outbreak, public health officials will alert the public and take further steps to prevent additional illnesses.
The CDC and FDA are working together on the investigation and will provide updates as soon as they are available.
Of the 100 people who have reportedly become sick with the particular strain of Salmonella, 10 have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

A total of 100 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Bareilly have been reported from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
The number of ill persons identified in each state is as follows: Alabama (2), Arkansas (1), Connecticut (5), District of Columbia (2), Georgia (4), Illinois (9), Louisiana (2), Maryland (10), Massachusetts (4), Mississippi (1), Missouri (1), New Jersey (7), New York (23), North Carolina (2), Pennsylvania (3), Rhode Island (4), South Carolina (3), Texas (3), Virginia (5), and Wisconsin (9).
