BOSTON (CBS/AP) -- More than 1,000 civic, business and religious leaders from around Massachusetts attended an annual Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast in South Boston Monday.

The proceeds fund student scholarships and community programs sponsored by Union United Methodist Church and St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church.
Princeton University professor and author of "Barbershops, Bibles and BET" Melissa Harris-Perry was the guest speaker.
Gov. Deval Patrick participated in the 7th Annual Martin Luther King Family Services celebration at Springfield's Eastfield Mall late Monday morning.
Later today, Patrick will attend the Boston Children's Chorus' 8th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. tribute concert at the New England Conservatory in Boston.
Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray offered remarks at the 26th Annual Community Breakfast honoring King at the Quinsigamond Community College Gym in Worcester.
