Rocks, shells, sand and loads of seaweed were piled up on the beaches of Martha's Vineyard early Tuesday morning.

Some residents were helping clean up the town's beaches and help their own gardens at the same time.

"It's a gardening experiment," a man named Ed told WBZ NewsRadio's Karen Twomey.

Ed was on the beach around 4:30 a.m.

"The early bird catches the worm," he said.

Ed backed his pick-up truck onto the beach and piled the seaweed high in the back.

"It's great fertilizer so we'll have great tomatoes and peppers next year," Ed said.
