Shelters Set Up Near Coastal Areas, Many Residents Asked To Evacuate
MARSHFIELD (CBS/AP) - The threat of coastal flooding prompted Marshfield police to issue a Code Red Alert, asking coastal residents to self evacuate to safe place for next two high tides.
Scituate police also recommended that residents consider leaving their homes for higher ground.
Those high tides were at 9 pm Friday and 10 am Saturday.
With hurricane-force winds and seas as high as 35 feet, there was a serious risk of coastal flooding.
A flood warning is in effect and as much as 2 feet of snow could fall.
The Steamship Authority has also now suspended all ferry service between Nantucket and Hyannis and between Martha's Vineyard and Woods Hole.
Officials on Cape Cod and other coastal areas say they've opened shelters for people who need to seek refuge from the blizzard.
Shelters are opening at high schools in Sandwich, South Yarmouth, Eastham and Falmouth. All of them accept animals.
