Mariners Give David Ortiz A 34-Pound Fish As Sendoff Gift
BOSTON (CBS) -- David Ortiz has received some truly unique gifts during his farewell tour through baseball, but the Seattle Mariners topped them all on Wednesday night.
The Mariners presented Ortiz with a collection of goodies ahead of Boston's 3-1 loss, including a 34-pound fish. Yes, a 34-pound fish.
The Northwest king salmon was tossed out on the field by a pair of Seattle's famous fish mongers.
Luckily for Ortiz and his teammates, it will be shipped back to Boston and won't be sitting on the team's charter as they finish off their road trip.
The Mariners also presented Ortiz with a framed copy of his first pro contract that he signed with the M's as a 17-year-old back in November 1992, along with a picture of him in his Wisconsin Timber Rattlers uniform. Ortiz was traded by Seattle in September 1996, sent to the Minnesota Twins as the player to be named later to complete a deal for Dave Hollins.
If the contract and fish weren't enough, Mariners players Nelson Cruz, Felix Hernandez and Robinson Cano also joined Wednesday's pregame festivities, presenting Ortiz with a watch and a custom painting of the slugger. The trio also posed for some interesting pictures with Ortiz.
Expect more gifts for Ortiz this weekend when the Red Sox wrap up their road trip against the Dodgers in the slugger's final visit to Los Angeles. But it's going to be tough for any team the rest of the way to top the king salmon he was gifted on Wednesday night.
