Marchand Hearing With NHL Set For Noon

BOSTON (CBS) - Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand has a hearing set for noon with the NHL about his hit on Columbus' R.J. Umberger in Tuesday night's 3-2 shootout win.

The hit came in the second period and did not draw a penalty. The league is reviewing it because Marchand's elbow hit Umberger from behind. Umberger was down low at the time, so the elbow hit him in the head.

"From what I remember the puck was kind of bouncing around the neutral zone," Marchand recalled. "He kind of stopped and started to go for it. I just tried to make contact with him and I kind of hit him in the back of the shoulder. I saw the replay, it looks like I got him up high. But my initial intent was to make contact with him."

Marchand said he was surprised to hear about the hearing since there was little talk about it after the game.

The league could suspend the Bruins rookie as they are trying to put a stop to blind-side hits. Because the meeting is via conference call, the maximum number of games Marchand could be suspended is five.
