Marathon Survivors Cheer Boston Medical Center Runners Who Treated Them
BOSTON (CBS) – Adriane Haslet-Davis was one of the many marathon bombing survivors rushed to Boston Medical Center a year ago.
Saturday night she was on hand to motivate BMC's marathon team – many of the same people who cheered for her recovery.
"Own it. Run it and I will be there," she told the runners at a pasta dinner the hospital hosted for its 2014 marathon team at the Seaport Hotel.
Emergency room nurse Nancy Johnson decided she had to run this year's marathon.
"I took care of about 23 patients and I ran because I wanted to honor them," she said.
Johnson added that watching each of the survivors move forward pushed her to run.
"As much as we thought we had a part of their recovery it was there honestly their strength it was inspiring to us."
One of those runners along her side will be survivor J.P. Craven. He was injured while waiting for his father at the finish line.
This will be his first marathon.
"It's very important," he said, adding that those who helped the survivors become survivors – the doctors and nurses – motivate him.
Craven said running to raise money for Boston Medical Center is how he can help say thank you.
"I think a lot of them inspire me more than I inspire them," he said.
The runners and survivors also received a pep talk from their honorary captain, actor Kevin Spacey, who told the 107 BMC runners they are an inspiration to him.
"That heart, that will and that spirit will stay with me for the rest of my life," he said.
