Man Slashed At Endicott College Party Will Not See Justice
BEVERLY (CBS) - A Northeastern University student may never see justice for an injury that has left him disfigured for the rest of his life.
It happened at a party in Beverly near Endicott College in 2011.
"I was assaulted with a dangerous weapon either a broken bottle or a glass," the student told WBZ.
The scar on his face is a constant reminder of that night and of the fact that it seems no one will pay for the crime.
He has asked WBZ not to use his name, but the student did show us pictures of the injury he suffered at a party. His face was sliced right down to the jaw bone requiring hundreds of stitches and a several surgeries to repair.
The victim was in Beverly partying at an off campus house with Endicott College students and members of that school's lacrosse team. At the end of the night he argued with another man at the party and that's when his face was slashed.
When police arrived, the victim identified his alleged attacker. But this week, when that man went to trial, he was found not guilty. In an unorthodox move, the judge blamed a code of silence at Endicott.
And a lack of investigation on the part of the Beverly police.
"He stated that he felt justice was not served for me today," the student said. "I basically felt that the judge was apologizing to me."
Beverly's Police Chief defends his officers, saying they encountered 100 intoxicated students at the party. Chief Mark Ray says the prosecution was "significantly hindered by the many witnesses present refusing to identify the assailant."
But, the Chief says in a statement, "justice was not served in this case."
"It's disheartening that not one person could step up and honestly tell the truth, say they knew what happened," the student said.
He will pursue a civil suit in the matter.
