Man Shot By Police In Manchester, NH Held On $750,000 Cash Bail
MANCHESTER, NH (CBS) – A man who was shot by police in Manchester Monday night is being held on $750,000 cash bail. Police say 37-year-old Christopher Varagianis, of Pembroke, NH led police on a chase through the city.
It began with a medical call about an unconscious male at the Seven Days Market on Union Street. When paramedics arrived, authorities say Varagianis became combative and drove off in an SUV.
Manchester Police officers responded and attempted to stop Varagianis. During the chase, the SUV nearly struck a resident on Merrimack Street.
Officers eventually got the vehicle to stop in a parking lot at the corner of Pine Street and Merrimack Street. Police say they shot at Varagianis after he rammed his SUV into a police cruiser and narrowly hit a detective who had to jump out of the way.
After his SUV was eventually boxed in, police say Varagianis refused to the exit the vehicle, forcing officers to physically remove him. Police say he continued to resist arrest even after they used a taser in an attempt to subdue him.
After he was handcuffed, he was transported to Elliot Hospital to be treated for two gunshot wounds to the leg.
Varagianis, who remains hospitalized, has been charged with Attempted First Degree Assault, two counts of Felony Reckless Conduct, three counts of Disobeying a Police Officer and one count of Resisting Detention.
