Man Robbed At Knifepoint In Newton Home
NEWTON (CBS) - As of early Wednesday evening, Kyle (who asked us not to use his last name) had been awake for roughly 18 hours.
As he'd explain, it's hard to get back to sleep when you wake up to find a knife-wielding robber standing over your bed at 1:30 in the morning. But that's just what happened.
"It seemed like a dream, it really did -- until I saw the knife and snapped into reality, and realized what was going on," Kyle explains.
The thief broke in through a first-floor window of the Charlesbank Road house that Kyle rents with three other roommates. The suspect stole a knife from their kitchen, and headed upstairs.
"He looked a little strung out and I think he was just looking for a quick buck," Kyle says. "He was saying, 'Where's the money? Where's the money?', and that's literally all he was saying, 'Where's the money?'"
Kyle emptied his wallet of around $60 and then handed the suspect a gold chain that's been in his family for a while. But that was all he had.
"He wanted more than what I had to give him," Kyle continues. "And when he noticed that I didn't have much more to give him than what I already did, he started to get a little bit more aggressive, so that's when I knew I had to get out of there."
The burglar pushed Kyle, and then he drew back the knife as if he were going to stab him, so Kyle bolted down the stairs, screaming at his roommate on the first floor.
"[I was] yelling at him, 'Stay in, stay in your room! Call the cops!'"
The police were on scene in about two minutes, but the suspect had run out the front door and was gone.
"Newton police and the state police, they do a great job, they were here quick, that made me feel great," Kyle offers, though he admits he and his roommates are considering a new security system.
An advisory sent from the Newton Police Department, based on Kyle's description of the suspect, says they are looking for a white male, possibly Middle Eastern, tall, skinny, short dark hair, minor scruffy facial hair, a white T-shirt, jeans. The suspect spoke English but not very well, and was sweating profusely.
