31-year-old Derin McWilliams of Lynn was in Nissan Maxima on 95 north at about 11: 40 p.m. Tuesday with a woman and two children, when, for some unexplained reason, he ended up out on the road.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, which is just north of exit 52.
Police did not say whether he jumped, fell or was pushed.
However, the woman, who is said to be McWilliams's wife, kept driving.
Police caught up to her in Somerville and brought her and the children in for questioning.
They were treated as witnesses and released early Wednesday morning.
Any charges in McWilliams's death would have to come from the Essex County District Attorney's Office, but, so far, it appears they believe this was an accident.
