Man Charged In South End Stabbing Held On $100,000 Bail
BOSTON (CBS) -- A Boston man who allegedly stabbed a 61-year-old opera singer multiple times in a South End condominium complex on Monday was ordered held on $100,000 bail during his arraignment on Tuesday.
David Eng, 44, is charged with assault with intent to murder and home invasion.
He stood out-of-view behind a partially opened door during his appearance in Boston Municipal Court.
Police say Eng opened the unlocked door of his neighbor and stabbed that man with a folding knife.
The men live across the hall from one another on the fourth floor of the upscale condo on West Brookline Street.
The incident happened shortly after 2 p.m.
The defense says there is no question of competency, adding that this was not an unprovoked attack.
Prosecutors and witnesses say it was an unprovoked attack.
Witnesses also say they have had issues with Eng in the past.
The singer was taken to Tufts Medical Center after being critically injured.
"(Eng) stabbed the victim multiple times about his body," said Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney Montez Haywood in court, "Most significantly striking his carotid artery, and striking him in his bowel."
The assistant district attorney says the victim underwent emergency surgery on Monday and is undergoing another on Tuesday.
"It is still a question if the victim will live or die," Haywood said.
Eng is slated to appear in court on Sept. 4.
