Man Arrested For Attacking Hawk In Springfield

SPRINGFIELD (CBS) - Springfield police arrested a man for attacking a hawk Tuesday morning.

Two detectives were driving to the police station at about 7 a.m. when they spotted the red tail hawk on the sidewalk feeding on a pigeon that it just hunted down.

As the officers stopped to take a picture, they said a man threw a log at the hawk.

"Before the stunned officers had a chance to react the male took a candle stick holder that he was carrying and struck the Hawk with that and proceeded to stomp on the hawk with his boots," police said in a statement.

The detectives jumped out of their unmarked car and arrested 64-year-old George McKenzie.

He's now charged with animal cruelty.

The hawk couldn't fly after the attack because its wings were damaged.

Environmental police took it away for treatment and it eventually flew away.
