Malcolm Subban Likely To Join Bruins On Road Trip
BOSTON (CBS) -- Goaltender Malcolm Subban spent more than a week with the Bruins to start the month of February, but he was never given the opportunity to play. Now, he may finally get his chance.
Subban is likely to join the Bruins before their game in Edmonton on Wednesday. Head coach Claude Julien hinted that Subban may get to see game action this time around.
"All it is - is No. 1, it's competition, No. 2, it's an opportunity," Julien said Monday, according to the Bruins' official website. "Malcolm was with us for the week there [in early February], so we didn't get a chance to play him. Maybe after a week and going back, he gets that opportunity."
Subban's initial call-up on Jan. 30 came when the team sent NHL backup Niklas Svedberg to the AHL on a conditioning assignment following the all-star break. Yet Tuukka Rask played in all four of the games the Bruins played before Subban was sent back down to the AHL on Feb. 9.
Svedberg has gotten just one start in the past 13 games, and it did not go well for him. The 25-year-old allowed three goals on 10 shots before getting replaced during first intermission against the Stars on Feb. 10.
Subban, the No. 24 overall pick in the 2012 draft, owns a 2.47 goals-against average and .920 save percentage this year for the AHL Providence Bruins.
With 46 games played, Rask enters play Monday fifth in the NHL in that category among goaltenders.
