Make It Hard To Gamble And Even Harder To Vote
I'm hearing the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the biggest bookmaker in the business since Whitey was forced to move, is now contemplating a plan to allow the gamblers to buy lottery tickets on-line. You've got to be kidding me! We all know the old axiom "a fool and his money are soon parted" but now the Great and General Court wants to pass legislation to expedite that process? Even Barney Frank thinks it might be a good idea, which if I didn't think so before, now convinces me this is a bad idea. Barney, if you can't march your "bottom" to the neighborhood store, gas station, whatever to buy your lottery tickets, I don't feel sorry for you and I think the state would be making a big mistake if it was to open up the government bookie business to the internet. Why? You would be hurting the Mom and Pop stores that act as your booking agent. You'd be croaking the gas stations and all the small businesses that rely on lottery ticket sales to get people into the stores...AND.....you'd be proving another avenue for the people who can least afford it....to throw their money away....because that's what lotteries and casino's et al do. I understand it's entertainment, including for those who have money to burn, but you know as well as I.....the odds are overwhelmingly with the "house" and you are going to be the loser.
Oh, and I'll have to go into detail later, but regarding the title of this posting ("make it even harder to vote") I'm a firm believer in that. Don't make it easy to vote.....make it more difficult....demand a picture I-D, etc etc etc and maybe we'll eliminate a bunch of people who shouldn't be voting in the first place.
